"Chief of Staff" is still a month away from starting, but the drama has already been confirmed for a second season "Chief of Staff - Season 2". Sources close to the drama's production have confirmed that both seasons are being produced simultaneously in ten episode parts. This underscores tremendous confidence in the drama's likely performance.
The confidence is well-placed. "Chief of Staff" is lead actor Lee Jung-jae's first acting project in a drama in ten years. Lee Jung-jae has had a very successful career in film during this time. "Chief of Staff" had to have offered a very ambitious pitch in order to lure him away from potential film offers.
Certainly the scale of the project has matched that expectation. "Chief of Staff" aims to tell the story of a long-term political power struggle. Director Kwak Jeong-hwan has said that he worried over how to convincingly go over the transformation of the title character from an aide to a political power player in his own right. Director Kwak Jeong-hwan has said that the two season plan was a way of resolving the complexity required by the story.
Director Kwak Jeong-hwan also cited the importance of maintaining the character's freshness as critical to making the story work. He noted that, compared to a single sixteen episode season, two ten episode seasons would allow for more variety in pacing and story breaks.
Director Kwak Jeong-hwan has also had strong words of praise for Lee Jung-jae as an actor. He stated that not just Lee Jung-jae's acting, but every facet of his persona is excellent. Lee Jung-jae's passion was also cited as a strong point. The first season of "Chief of Staff" will begin on June 14th.
