[HanCinema's News] Director Kim Do-young Discusses "KIM Jiyoung: Born 1982"

"KIM Jiyoung: Born 1982" was a surprising presence at the box office this weekend, earning over a million admissions in its opener. "KIM Jiyoung: Born 1982" is the debut work of its director, Kim Do-young, but she has long worked in the South Korean entertainment industry as an actress. In an interview she was nonplussed by hostility toward the movie's concept.

"KIM Jiyoung: Born 1982" is based on the feminist novel of the same name. Kim Do-young has said that she worried more about getting the internal story of the novel correct than she did about how people might react to it with hostility. Kim Do-young has described the title character of the work as being someone she wanted to meet. Though an actress by trade, Kim Do-young discussed the title character in literary terms, and how she wanted to tell her story.

"Kim Ji-young: Born 1982" has been the subject of controversy because of the way it deals directly with feminist themes, such as giving up one's dreams in order to become a housewife. The feminist novel is well known on the South Korean literary circuit, and Kim Do-young appears to have been a fan of it even before she was tapped to direct the adaptation. "Kim Ji-young: Born 1982" stars Jung Yu-mi and Gong Yoo, and it premiered on October 23rd.
