[HanCinema's News] "Unasked Family" Starts Out at Over 20%

The latest daily drama from KBS, "Unasked Family", opened up with ratings of 20.8% on Monday morning. This is a small dip from the final episode of its predecessor, "A Place in the Sun", which had ratings of 17.6%.

While "A Place in the Sun" had the benefit of Oh Chang-seok as a leading man, the drama was long dogged as a fairly generic story centering around a corporate heir. While the drama did improve over time, its ratings are still fairly weak for its timeslot.

"Unasked Family" appears to have aroused more interest in viewers with its more down-to-earth presentation. Here, the lead character is a housewife played by Choi Yoon-so, and much of the drama is dominated by her struggles with her in-laws, most notably a mother-in-law played by veteran actress Yang Hee-kyung.

To date, "Unasked Family" is still using fairly standard daily genre tropes, just of a different family. Familial conflict ends up being punctuated by an unexpected tragedy. How well the drama will hold up over time is as of yet difficult to guess.
