Hirokazu Koreeda is an elite international director, and many have assumed that his work with the South Korean movie "Broker" was due principally to his respect for South Korean film culture. But Hirokazu Koreeda surprised many with comments in a recent interview stating that "Broker" was spurred in part by his interest in South Korean television dramas. "My Mister" was highlighted as making him a fan of Lee Ji-eun, leading to "Broker" casting the actress.

Like many Japanese people, Hirokazu Koreeda developed an interest in South Korean dramas due to the COVID-19 pandemic making travel outside the house unwise. "When the Camellia Blooms" alongside "Crash Landing on You" and "Itaewon Class" were cited as shows that he watched during this time. Hirokazu Koreeda also said he was looking forward to watching "My Liberation Notes" which he has been unable to do owing to the work he's been busy with lately.

Hirokazu Koreeda is interested in "My Liberation Notes" because it came from screenwriter Park Hae-yeong who wrote "My Mister" in addition to "Another Miss Oh" which was her first major project. As per the times, Hirokazu Koreeda claims to actually be more interested in serial dramas than films at the current moment, appreciating the convenience of being able to start and stop at any time. "Broker" deals with a baby box adjacent incident and will be released in South Korean theaters on June 8th.
