[HanCinema's News] "Miss and Mrs. Cops" Given Spiritual Support at Box Office

On Tuesday May 14th "Miss and Mrs. Cops" passed the latest Avengers film to briefly become the number one film at the South Korean box office for that day. That position was quickly lost thanks to the appearance of "The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil" on May 15th, but at over 800,000 admissions "Miss and Mrs. Cops" has been doing decently enough.

Part of these numbers stem from an online spiritual support campaign. Because "Miss and Mrs. Cops" is a mainstream film where the leads are explicitly women, some people have felt that to better support women's representation in South Korean film, they should reserve tickets even if they're too busy to go, thus sending a message that there is a market for such films.

This campaign actually started with "Miss Baek" from last year, a smaller scale film with limited marketing. It's difficult to say how much effect the campaign has actually had. The campaign has received criticism as the notion that a movie should be supported solely because of the gender of the leads, absent any other relevant qualities, is absurd.
