[HanCinema's News] "Parasite" Breaks Ten Million Mark

Fifty three days after its initial theatrical release "Parasite" has achieved ten million admissions at the box office. This puts "Parasite" in an elite class of South Korean box office hits, even though the film was designed as an art house project rather than a blockbuster.

"Parasite" is the fourth film to break the mark at the Korean box office this year. The first was "Extreme Job" back in January. The second was the latest Avengers film from Disney while the third was Disney's Aladdin remake, which premiered only a week before "Parasite".

Both Aladdin and "Parasite" had to rely on long term word-of-mouth to pass the ten million mark. Whether "Parasite" would manage to hit the ten million mark was a major source of speculation, as its admissions had mostly flatlined shortly after it broke nine million. A brief burst of reservations after winning four prizes at the Chunsa Film Festival were enough to get it over the top.
