[HanCinema's News] The Cast of "Parasite" Discuss the Film's Strong Points

"Parasite" continues its powerful streak at the South Korean box office. Viewers for the film make up half the reservations going into the weekend, where the movie is sure to break the seven million viewer mark. While much attention has been paid to the influence of director Bong Joon-ho, the film's strong cast have their own opinions as to why the movie is doing wel.

Song Kang-ho, who plays the father figure of the movie's poor family, has described "Parasite" as very quickly paced, to the point it brought up complicated emotions in his performance. Song Kang-ho also described the film's wide array of emotion as being central to what he considers to be the movie's broad appeal.

Choi Wooshik, who plays the son of the family, has considered the strong point of "Parasite" to be its essential Koreanness, and how it gets into viewers' heads and provokes questions of why the story is unfolding in this particular way. Choi Wooshik said that his expectations for the role were low and that he was surprised at the emotional directions his character ended up going in.

Park So-dam, who plays the daughter of the family, has emphasized the diverse interpretations that "Parasite" inspires. Park So-dam said that when she first read the scenario, even then she wondered how other people might interpret it. This, in Park So-dam's mind, gave the film strong conversational appeal.

Cho Yeo-jeong, who plays the mother of the rich family, has considered the film enaging because as soon as the poor family is introduced, there are a wide variety of potential new story directions. She likened the inherently chaotic nature of the narrative to meeting new people in real life, and the things we don't talk about.

Lastly, Lee Sun-kyun, who plays the father of the rich family, has simply said that there was no means by which to assess "Parasite"'s popularity, describing the project as Bong Joon-ho's product. Lee Sun-kyun said that "Parasite" was similar to Bong Joon-ho personality-wise. It's quirky, not fun, yet oddly and directly appealing.
