[HanCinema's News] Wide Slate of Movies to Follow "Peninsula" in August

The success of "Peninsula" both in South Korea as well as overseas has led many to conclude that the South Korean box office has returned to normal. But a better indicator is likely the return of more off-beat, lower level films to cineplexes. While big titles like "Steel Rain 2: Summit" and "Deliver Us From Evil" are attracting the most attention, minor films are embracing a wide gamut of genres.

Independents films from last year's Busan International Film Festival, for example, are now making an appearance in earnest. Director's Guild of Korea Award winner "Moving On" will release on August 20th. A story of growing up, it has the potential to be a hit with the same audiences that appreciated "House of Hummingbird" last year. "An Old Lady" on August 26th will go into much darker territory, detailing the experience of an older woman who is raped by a nursing home caregiver.

In less artistically minded movies, "Stone Skipping" will delve into the friendship between an intellectually disabled man and the various people he runs across in life. The sci-fi comedy thriller, "The Night of the Undead", while also lacking a confirmed release date, has also gotten surprising hype due to it featuring Lee Jung-hyun of "Peninsula" in the leading role. These are only some of the movies to soon be released as the market returns to its preexisting genre variety.
