[HanCinema's News] Yim Soon-rye and Hong Kyung-pyo Invited to Join Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences

According to a report from Variety, Yim Soon-rye and Hong Kyung-pyo have been invited to join the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. Members of the Academy, as it is more informally called, are responsible for voting for the best pictures of the year in the United States centered Academy Awards ceremony.

The two are noteworthy for their relative obscurity. While Hong Kyung-pyo is the cinematographer for "Parasite" as well as a large number of other internationally well regarded South Korean films, Yim Soon-rye has a relatively weak international reputation. As a director her films have only ever really been relevant in the domestic South Korean market.

Yim Soon-rye does have eight films to her credit, from "Waikiki Brothers" in 2001 to "Little Forest" in 2018. She was most likely included on the list of invites because the Academy has faced much criticism in recent years for its membership skewing towards older white men with little contemporary relevance in the international film industry.

A larger slate of South Korean film professionals was brought in last year. Actors Ha Jung-woo, Bae Doona, Kim Min-hee, Cho Jin-woong, director Hong Sang-soo Lee Chang-dong, Park Hoon-jung, art director Ryoo Seong-hee, music director Lee Byeong-woo, and producer Oh Jeong-wan all received invitations. Prior to that actors Lee Byung-hun, Choi Min-sik, Song Kang-ho, and directors Bong Joon-ho and Park Chan-wook were already members.
