HanCinema's Korean Box Office Review

(2013.02.08 ~ 2013.02.10)

It was another closely fought race at the box office this past weekend, but it was Lee Hwan-hyeong's "Miracle in Cell No.7" that reclaimed pole position with 1.3 million admissions (37.12%). Lee's latest had over 800 screenings to help its cause as it now moves to 6,279,229 admissions, making it the highest grossing Korean film of the year thus far. The Lunar New Year weekend saw the release of a number new films, including Kim Soon-rye's new comedy drama "Run to the South", an old Russian fairy tale retold in glorious 3D animation, as well the fifth instalment in the popular "Die Hard" franchise.

After being last weekend's choice film Ryoo Seung-wan's action thriller "The Berlin File" slipped to second with 1.2 million admissions. "The Berlin File" was released on the 30th of last month and has now passed the 4 million admissions mark. Ryoo Seung-wan has worked in numerous departments within Korea's film industry and also wrote the script for "The Berlin File". Fans will remember his efforts as the director of brutal "The Unjust" back in 2010 which came close to amassing 3.0 million admissions during its run late that year. At number three is "A Good Day to Die Hard", the fifth instalment of the "Die Hard" series starring Bruce Willis and Jai Courtney. "A Good Day to Die Hard" settled in third place with 478,618 and was followed by Yim Soon-rye's "Run to the South", an adaptation of a Japanese novel by Ohkuta Hideo. Lim's first film was "Waikiki Brothers" (2001) and her last film was a contribution to the omnibus film "Sorry, Thanks" in 2011. "Run to the South" opened to 420 screens and managed to snatch 291,818 admissions in its first weekend spell.

"The Snow Queen" is a Russian animation based off Hans Christian Andersen's 1845 fairy tale of the same name. This 3D computer-animated film is directed by Vladlen Barbe and Maxim Sveshnikov and attracted 73,358 moviegoers in its first weekend out in Korea. "Pororo, The Racing Adventure" fell three places to find itself at this weekend's number six with 59,255, and was chased by the re-release of Pixar Animation Studio's "Monsters, Inc. 3D" which claimed 31,377 of its own.

Victor Hugo's book adaptation "Les Misérables" fell two spots, in the process adding just 18,153 to its new total admissions count of 5,835,054. "Les Misérables" has proven to be very popular with Korea audiences and this weekend marks its fifth week in the top ten. At nine is Jo Jin-kyoo's "Man on the Edge" which is closing in on 4 million admissions, and lastly we find Yarn Martel's popular adaptation "Life of Pie" with just 4,728, moving its total now to a modest 1,568,566.
