The whole country is still sweltering in record heat despite the start of lunar autumn on Monday.

Temperatures soared to 39 degrees Celsius in Miryang, South Gyeongsang Province, 37.2 degrees in Haenam, South Jeolla Province on Sunday, the highest recorded August temperatures there, the Korea Meteorological Administration said.

The mercury is expected to rise to 32 degrees in Seoul and 37 degrees in Yangsan and Miryang, South Gyeongsang on Monday, with heat wave advisories still in effect for most parts.

Many regions are expected to be affected by tropical nights, when the temperature never falls below 25 degrees. The morning low in Seoul was a toasty 28.7 degrees on Sunday.

Meanwhile, this year's fifth typhoon Noru has veered toward Japan and is expected to make landfall on the main island of Honshu on Monday afternoon. Korea's south coast and Jeju, which are within range of typhoon's indirect influence, will be affected by strong winds but escape the storm's full force.

The KMA warned of high waves flooding seaside roads or overtopping seawalls there.
