According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, temperatures still hovered over 34 degrees Celsius across the country on Thursday -- 34.3 degrees in Seoul, 34.8 degrees in Daejaeon, 35 degrees in Daegu, and 34.7 degrees in Gwangju.

And the scorching heat will persist on Friday and Saturday.

But temperatures will begin to fall this weekend and go down gradually from next week.

The KMA said the mercury will no longer climb past 33 degrees from Sunday, except in some southern parts. Sleepless hot nights will gradually fade out too.

The lowest morning temperature in Seoul was 26.2 degrees Thursday, bringing the total number of tropical nights when the mercury did not drop below 25 degrees in the metropolitan area to 26 this summer. This is the second most after the record 36 in 1994.
