Holiday Dishes That Relieve Digestive Trouble

The holiday dining tables are laden of delicious food, but digestive problems are often not far behind. Here are some foods that can help digestion and are easy to prepare for the lunar New Year.

Besides the typical dishes such as tteokguk (rice cake soup) and jeon (Korean pancakes), they add a little extra character to the table.

◆ Seaweed Fulvescens Porridge

Available only in winter, seaweed fulvescens is rich in nutrients and good for digestion. As it goes well with oysters, the two ingredients together make a great rice porridge.

Before cooking, wash the seaweed in a sieve with runny water. To maintain the taste and texture of the ingredients, add seaweed only once the rice is cooked, and the oysters when the porridge is almost ready.

Allow some time to cool as the seaweed can easily cause a burn in the mouth due to its fine texture.

◆ Wild Greens Dumplings

Dumplings made only with wild greens are also good for digestion. Tofu or vermicelli can be added, but it is better not to include them to fully enjoy the fresh scent of the wild greens.

Dumplings can also be made with leftovers from the ancestral rite on the lunar New Year's Day.

The wild greens on the memorial service table can be cut into pieces and fried to be used as ingredients.

◆ Desserts

The usual desserts for the lunar New Year are fruit, juice or rice cakes. But how about some variety?

Pan-fried sweet rice cakes decorated with flower petals and chestnut cookies are a delight both for eyes and palate.
