The novel reflects on Korea's past and present by interchanging the voices of an aging wealthy architect and a young playwright who is barely making ends meet by working part-time jobs.

After learning about receiving the award, Hwang (75) said, "Unfair and malicious acts continue to be committed in our society, so there will be no shortage of themes of conflict for novelists to use".

The Emile Guimet Prize was established last year to promote Asian literature in France and is awarded to works published in French.
