Hyundai to Start on New Skyscraper After Epic Delay

Automotive giant Hyundai will break ground in the next couple of months on a new headquarters building in Samseong-dong, Seoul.

Construction of the 569-m skyscraper had been delayed since 2014 over concerns that it could obstruct military aircraft operations over the capital because it is located near Seoul Air Base in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province.

Hyundai eventually yielded to demands from the military to pay for a new radar for the Air Force including the cost of setting up, operating and maintaining it, according to a government source.

The tower is scheduled to be completed in 2026. It will have seven basement floors and 105-stories to rival the 555-m Lotte Tower, which is also in the affluent Gangnam area of southern Seoul.
