Hyundai on Thursday unveiled a hydrogen electric bus for police and signed a memorandum of understanding with the government to promote zero-emission buses.

Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon and Korean National Police Agency Commissioner General Min Gab-ryong attended a test drive event.

The new bus releases no emissions and has a filter system that cleans air. It can purify about 4.8 kg of air for every 1 km it travels. It has 29 seats.

"Police buses are often left idling on downtown streets", a Hyundai spokesman said. "A hydrogen bus will be able to serve as an air purifier".

Under the MOU, Hyundai will provide two hydrogen electric buses to the police agency within this year. It will then begin mass-production in 2021 and provide a total of 802 of them to the agency by 2028.

The government promised to build 310 charging stations nationwide by 2022 to promote green cars.
