The Berlin International Film Festival announced Tuesday that it will grant renowned local director Im Kwon-taek the Honorary Golden Bear award for his contribution to cinematography. The 55th festival takes place on Feb. 10-20.

At a news conference on Feb. 1, the festival committee said they will give him the higher-ranking award instead of the Berlinale Camera award as they had first announced.

Awarded the Honorary Golden Bear on Feb. 12, Im will be the first Asian to receive the honor, one of the festival's highest awards. Following the award ceremony, one of his films "Chunhyang" in 2000 will be screened.

Im began working in film in 1962 and is currently working on his 100th production. His representative works, including "Wangshimni", "Mandala", "Gilsotteum" and "Seopyeonje", will be shown as a retrospective during the festival.

Separately, an additional 13 films will be screened at Berlin's Arsena theater for one more month after the film festival ends.

Along with Im, the Spanish actor, director and screenwriter Fernando FernŠn Gŗmez will also be awarded the same honor at the festival.
