"Immortal Admiral Yi Sun-shin" gains popularity in the U.S.

A famous line from the epic KBS drama "Immortal Admiral Yi Sun-shin" -- "Don't let the enemy know about my death" -- has earned the series enormous popularity in the United States, where it aired on a satellite TV channel.

Choi Chun-ae, director of the KBS Global Center, held a press conference in the United States on Sept. 1 and videotaped several Chicago residents repeating that line from the series. The people appearing in the video are members of the study group "Chicago Drama in Korea", who say the series helps them improve their Korean-language skills and learn more about Korea.

The group was founded when its members chanced across "Immortal Admiral Yi Sun-shin" on the Internet and were completely mesmerized by the culture and exotic costumes featured in the drama. The group members say that just repeating the actors' lines is exciting for them.

"KBS World, the international broadcasting division of KBS, was the first Korean broadcaster to show its drama on U.S. national television. In September, KBS World's channel will be broadcast around-the-clock to 1 million households in all 50 American states via Echo Star, a leading U.S. satellite broadcaster", said Choi at the press conference.

Choi also added that such a feat was comparable only to the debut of the Korean car model Pony 2 in the U.S. market. "By joining the ranks of mainstream channels in the highly competitive U.S. broadcasting market, we will lay the foundation for expanding the Korean Wave to the entire world and diversifying its genres, which are currently limited to soap operas", said Choi".
