International Forum on "Hallyu" to Be Held in Chuncheon June 10

An international symposium will be held to find ways to maintain the recent "Hallyu" boom in Asian nations that was sparked by the KBS TV miniseries "Winter Sonata".

The Hallyu Forum Committee will hold the "2005 International Symposium on Hallyu" at the Doosan Resort in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province on June 10 under the theme "Continuity of Hallyu and the Role of Gangwon Province".

During the symposium, Yoo Seung-ho, a professor of video culture at Kangwon National University, will present his thesis on "ways to maintain the Hallyu boom".

Kim Jong-uk, a professor of Vietnamese studies at Chungwoon University, will present a thesis on the "Hallyu boom in Vietnam and an analysis of Vietnamese culture", and Chu Chae-hyuk, a professor of history at Kangwon National University, will discuss the "Hallyu boom in Mongolia and an analysis of Mongolian culture".

Following these presentations, Japanese university professors and Taiwanese broadcasters will have discussions on the Hallyu trends that are spreading in Japan, Taiwan and the Philippines.

In addition, the participants will seek ways to utilize the Hallyu boom as a catalyst for the tourist industry by discussing "Hallyu and ways to galvanize regional tourism", "Current status and prospects of the Hallyu boom in Taiwan and Vietnam", and "Ways to take advantage of the Hallyu boom for tourism in Gangwon Province".

An official from the Hallyu Forum Committee said, "The Hallyu boom fanned by 'Winter Sonata' has added value to Gangwon Province. But there is no guarantee that such luck will continue to smile on us. We, therefore, decided to host this symposium in order to find an academic approach to determine strategic ways to continuously develop Hallyu culture and contribute to galvanizing the tourist industry".

The Hallyu Forum Committee, composed of local people from various walks of life, was launched in October 2004 with the purpose of systematically maintaining the Hallyu boom ignited by "Winter Sonata".
