The Supreme Court on Friday upheld a one-year prison sentence for the celebrity plastic surgeon found guilty of malpractice leading to the death of rock singer Sin Hae-cheol.

Kang Se-hoon was also stripped of his medical license. Kang performed stomach surgery in October 2014 without Shin's consent and in the process accidentally punctured his small intestine and pericardium.

The singer died after complaining of high fever and intense pain. The cause of death was identified as peritonitis and blood poisoning resulting from Kang's slapdash work.

The doctor, fearful of losing his well-heeled Gangnam clientele, protested his innocence and posted Shin's medical records online, which was illegal, claiming he took all necessary measures before and after surgery.

The Seoul Central District Court in April last year ordered Kang to pay W1.59 billion in damages to the singer's family and sentenced him to two years' probation. But the Seoul High Court on appeal in January increased the sentence to a year behind bars.
