Jang Dong-gun named as most impressive actor

Jang Dong-gun, a star who has enjoyed popularity across Asia, was picked as the most outstanding Korean actor in 2005, according to a survey released yesterday.

In the poll of 1,502 Korean adults, conducted by Gallup Korea last December, one out of five respondents (20.4 percent) said that among Korean actors, Jang was the most impressive in 2005.

Jang, who appeared on the cover of Time magazine's Asian edition in November, starred in a recently-released Korean blockbuster "Typhoon" and The Promise, a multinational fantasy film jointly produced by Korea, China and the United States.

Actress Lee Young-ae, the heroine of "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance", ranked second with 17.5 percent of the votes. She is gaining an international reputation as her acting in the movie led her to her selection as a judge for the International Berlin Film Festival next month.

Actress Jeon Do-yeon (12.1 percent) and actor Hwang Jung-min (11.5 percent) took the third and fourth place. They appeared together in the movie "You are my Sunshine" as a coffee shop waitress and a farmer falling in love with each other. Actor Bae Yong-joon, also known as Yonsama, who starred in "April Snow", followed them with 9.4 percent. In the survey, Jang gained more votes from men, especially from men in their 20s. In contrast, Hwang received strong support from women in their 20s.
