Director Nam Geon with SBS said, "We were impressed with Jang Keun-suk's passion and desire for acting and he even inspired us about the character, Daegil" and "During the long conversation with Jang Keun-suk, we became assured that we'd be able to have such great time on the filming set".

Jang Keun-suk, who is coming back to the small screen in two years, said "While I have been attending a graduate school for the last two years, I looked around myself and could take some time to refine my attitudes and passion towards acting" and "I've been careful with selecting my next work to transform my previous image. As the result, I could have this awesome opportunity to be able to meet drama fans through my role, Dae-gil".

Also, Jang Keun-suk emphasized, "Please stay tuned for the rebirth of Jang Keun-suk, who is now equipped with both acting abilities and sincerity" and "I will put all of my efforts forth to open up the second act of my acting career through Dae-gil, an unfortunate prince and a skillful hoodwinker".

"The Royal Gambler" depicts a story about one big match between Dae-gil, who became a hoodwinker after losing everything, and King Yeongjo of Joseon. The new drama begins once 'Six Flying Dragons' has finished.
