Actor Jang Keun-suk will appear on Japan's Fuji TV variety program "SMAP X SMAP", his agency said on Tuesday.

The "hallyu" (Korean wave) star, who rose to popularity in the neighboring Asian country through local television dramas, has already recorded the session that is slated to air on July 18. It will be a 70-minute special episode.

He took part in the "Bistro SMAP" corner to compete in a cooking challenge. He vied against the members of SMAP, the J-pop band that hosts the program.

"Jang Keun-suk made witty jokes and danced with SMAP members, and generally had a good time", his agency said.

"The producer of SMAP X SMAP said SMAP members had been looking forward to meeting Jang, who is becoming increasingly popular in Japan, and the shooting went very well. The makers of the program expect to receive positive responses from viewers".

In the past, other hallyu stars such as actors Jang Dong-gun, Lee Young-ae, Lee Byung-hun, Choi Ji-woo, Ryo Si-won and kwon Sang-woo as well as pop singer BoA have been invited to appear on the program.

In addition to appearing in TV dramas, Jang also has top-selling albums in Japan.
