Japanese cartoon of K-pop girl groups raises eyebrows

An online Japanese cartoon is drawing protest from netizens here as it overstated sensational and derogatory images of K-pop girl groups.

The cartoon not only directly mentions two girl groups ― Kara and Girls' Generation ― but also shows some girls dressed in their signature uniforms, some in their underwear while others are completely naked.

It insinuated in the cartoon that members of popular girl groups have been forced to provide sexual favors.

After the cartoon made headlines on Internet portal sites and blogs Thursday, the two agencies representing the groups, DSP Media for Kara and SM Entertainment for Girls' Generation, said they will take legal action.

"Depicting the Korean girl groups in such a sensational and malicious way is clearly libelous and we will take legal action as soon as we look into the matter", DSP Media said in a press release.

While many fans have agreed that the agencies should take legal action, some have claimed that rather than reacting emotionally, agencies must take a step back and try to comprehend the whole situation with a broader point of view.

"The content is nonsense indeed, but we need to find out who and where it first came from and try to understand the accurate facts reflected in the cartoons", an official from SM Entertainment said.
