Jeonju Digital Project Focuses on North/South America

This year's Jeonju Digital Project 2010 has set it sights on the Americas. The annual project provides 50 million won to three film makers for the production and delivery to international audiences of a short film. This year's selected directors are Matías Piñeiro from Argentina and James Benning and Denis Côté, both from Canada. All three directors have had their work shown previously at JIFF.
Pig Iron is a dramatic narrative that focuses on the fiery process of smelting iron ore that is eventually transformed into steel. The director, James Benning, is an avante guarde film maker whose large filmography spans a period of over 30 years. The film was shot Germany at a steelworks in Duisburg. Denis Côté who has had two previous works at JIFF is this year bringing a forest thriller to Jeonju's audiences. Les lignes enemies is an intense and edgy film that focuses on wasted masculinity as six armed men roam the forest looking for trouble. The director has previously won gold and silver at Locarno. The next director Matías Piñeiro has also had his work shown at Locarno and, like Côté, previously won the Woo-suk award at Jeonju. His film Hold Old Rosalind focuses on an actor playing the famous character from William Shakespeare's play As You Like It, as she tries to get to grips with the play and life.
Digital, always touted as the dominant future medium for film is not just the goal of the project but the very film makers themselves. How they employ their passion and zeal to push aesthetical boundaries is the real focus of the project. JIFF has always looked to push geographical boundaries too; giving opportunities not just to Asia's up and coming film directors but also focusing on Europe and Africa.
The works will premiere at the Jeonju International Film Festival which begins April 29. The omnibus project stands a good chance of being viewed by international audiences as past projects have been invited to Venice, Toronto, Locarno, Torino, Vancouver, Vienna, and Hong Kong. The festival will wrap up on the 7th of May.
