Joe Hisaishi composes Korean movie first time

This summer's upcoming and highly anticipated movie "Welcome to Dongmakgol" will feature music from world-famous movie soundtrack composer Joe Hisaishi.

Having shown a deep interest in the movie since seeing an early script, the genius composer finally joined the production of "Welcome to Dongmakgol", making his debut in the Korean film industry.

The collaboration of Joe Hisaishi and "Welcome to Dongmakgol" was dramatic and perhaps ordained by destiny. The movie's director Park Gwang-hyeon had wanted Hisaishi's music to be used in his movie since the initial production stage, so he sent an early movie script to the composer. Ten days later Park received back a meeting request. This was such a rewarding moment for Park that he made efforts to work in Japanese for Hisaishi's sake and prepared a contact network for him.

Hisaishi's unusual decision to write the music composition for "Welcome to Dongmakgol" is creating a sensation in Japan, as he has only done background music for a select group of French, U.S. and Japanese films in the past. This heightens the expectations for the Korean film, as it is clearly a movie that moved and excited the world-famous composer.

The movie is a beautiful story set against a backdrop of war and distrust. Famous for his wonderful melodies that touch the hearts of audiences all over the world, Hisaishi expressed the reason he decided to join the music production of "Welcome to Dongmakgol" by saying, "I was moved when I realized such a wonderful story could be depicted about the painful memory of the Korean War while Korea still remains the only separated nation in the world". These days Hisaishi always checks his email to monitor the progress of the movie's Korean music production team. He has reportedly sent an email, "Now I am also a Dongmakgol dweller", expressing his satisfaction with the other staff members.

"Welcome to Dongmakgol" portrays one of the greatest military maneuvers of the Korean War that took place at a village called "Dongmakgol".

With a budget amounting to 8 billion won, it features twice the CG work of the blockbuster "Taegukgi". Starring veteran actors Jung Jae-young, Shin Ha-kyun and Kang Hye-jung, and featuring beautiful images depicted by renowned commercial advertisements director Park Gwang-hyun, it is one of the most promising movies of the summer. Currently in the late production stages, the film will be released in August.
