"Journals of Musan" and "Arirang" win at Tokyo Filmex

The 12th Tokyo Filmex awarded its Special Jury Prize and $8,000 of Kodak film stock to Park Jung-bum's "The Journals of Musan" and the Agnes B Audience Award to Kim Ki-duk's "ARIRANG - Movie".

Park's feature film debut "The Journals of Musan" has won a raft of awards since its world premiere at the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) last year where it picked up the New Currents and International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) awards. These include the VPRO Tiger Award at Rotterdam and the Best New Narrative Director Award at the Tribeca Film Festival.

"The Journals of Musan" is a film that portrays the struggles of a North Korean defector living in Seoul.

Kim Ki-duk's self-made documentary "ARIRANG - Movie" played as the Tokyo Filmex's opening film before it won the Agnes B Audience Award. Also a major prize-winner at film festivals around the world, "ARIRANG - Movie" has been picking them up ever since the film made its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year where it won the top prize in the Un Certain Regard section.

Tokyo Filmex's competition section featured ten films from emerging Asian filmmakers. The jury was headed by film director Amir NADERI, whose Cut recently screened in Venice and Toronto and had a special screening at Filmex. Also on the jury were French film critic Philippe AZOURY, Korean film critic and academic JUNG Soo-wan`, Japanese film director Makoto SHINOZAKI and Nicholas Ray Foundation president Susan RAY.

They awarded director Pema Tseden's Tibetan-language Chinese film "Old Dog" with the Grand Prize and $12,800 (Y1m). The film also previously won awards at the Cinema Digital Seoul (CinDi) Film Festival and the Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF) earlier this year.

Tokyo Filmex was held Nov 19-27.
