Girl group 'Kara"s third single in Japan "Jet Coaster Love" topped the Oricon Weekly Single Chart on Tuesday, selling 123,000 copies in the first week since its release on April 6, the band's record to date.
It was also the first time in the 43 years and three months of Oricon's single chart that a foreign female group climbed to the top in the first week of a release, and the first time in 30 years and five months that a foreign female group topped the weekly chart. The last time was Irish band The Nolans' "Dancing Sister" in November 1980, 16 weeks after its release.
Currently plagued by a contract dispute with their management agency, Kara in a press release on Tuesday said, "Our 'Jet Coaster Love' claimed the top spot thanks to the support of our fans. We will do our best to inspire them and give them hope as well".
The band debuted in Japan in August 2010 and posted total sales of 1.3 billion yen (W17.8 billion) for singles, albums, and DVDs last year, becoming the bestselling new artist of the year.
