KBS Honors Outstanding Koreans Overseas

KBS honored several distinguished Koreans overseas during the 17th KBS Overseas Compatriots Award ceremony held on Tuesday.

The award is given in five categories to ethnic Koreans living overseas who have done an exemplary job of promoting the image, people and culture of Korea.

Professor Jin Bing-min at Yanbian University in China received the award in the humanities and social sciences category for his study of Danjae Shin Chae-ho, a Korean scholar and independence activist. The science and technology award went to Kang Sung-kwon who has worked to develop environment-friendly electronics materials for 20 years.

Artist Kwun Sun-cheol, who lives in France, received the arts and culture award. The social service award went to Catholic monk Kim Chang-nam who runs a free medical center in Kazakhstan. The recipient of the special award is Lee Kee-hang, the head of a memorial for Korean freedom fighter Yi Jun.

Ninety-nine ethnic Koreans from 24 countries, including the U.S. and China, were recommended for the awards.
