KIM Dong-ho is to Step Down as Director of PIFF

Kim Dong-ho, founding director of Asia's biggest film festival is to step down from his role. KIM, who has been with the Pusan International Film Festival since its inception in 1996 has been instrumental in bringing the world's cinematic focus to the seaside city every October. The PIFF has always had a strong Asian focus and has helped to bring the works of many new Asian directors to the world's attention. In recent years KIM has co-shared the directorial role with LEE Yong-kwan, who will stay in the role.
Kim Dong-ho was born in Hongcheon in the Gangwon-do region in the northwest of South Korea but spent much of his time in Busan. He is well known as one of the hardest working participants in the film/film festival industry. As well as directional responsibilities, the 73 year old has published books, numerous columns and visits about 20 festivals a year. He served as a jury member at this year's Cannes International Film Festival and was even the head of the Korean Film Council's predecessor, the Korean Motion Picture Promotion Corporation, back in the 1990s. He has also worked as a CEO and as a university professor. KIM did suffer health complications a few years back but has continued on with his role until now.
Director KIM will stay on in his role until the festival's next annual plenary session which should be in February. At that time a possible successor will be named. The next Pusan International Film Festival will be held October 7 through to the 15th.
