A member of the star group Shinhwa, Kim Dong-wan, who had been recently discharged from the army, visited Japan and announced that he would begin his activities as a solo singer in Japan. He had worked as a public service worker to fulfill his military duty from December, 2008 for two years and had been discharged on December 7, 2010. He held a commemorative event in Tokyo on December 14.

He selected 160 fans among more than 3,000 applicants and invited them to the event. During the event, Kim showcased his song entitled "Place Where You Need To Be", which is included in the best-of album entitled "KIM DONGWAN JAPAN PREMIUM BEST" to be released on December 15. At the press conference held after the event, he said fluently in Japanese, "I have been waiting for this stage for the last two years. Shinhwa's concert held in Japan in the past has remained in my memory, and I want to release an album under the name of the group Shinhwa in 2012. I want to perform as an actor in Korea and as a singer in Japan, and I am willing to appear in any Japanese drama or movie if I receive a suggestion".

After the event concert, Kim Dong-wan toured the shopping district in Shin-Okubo that was decorated with a wave of orange flags -- which symbolize Kim -- and posters depicting him amidst a throng of his cheering fans. He also visited a Korean restaurant and signed his autograph on one of his posters.
