He was found unconscious in a residency hotel in Cheondam-dong, Seoul on Monday evening, according to Gangnam police. He was taken to a nearby hospital but later pronounced dead.

Jonghyun's sister made 911 call in the late afternoon, alarmed by a text message from her brother that read, "Please let me go. Tell me I did well. Final farewell".

Two days before his death, he sent her a 2,000-character text message telling her he had been having a "hard time".

Police found Jonghyun at 6:10 p.m. and moved him to Konkuk University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead 20 minutes later.

Jonghyun had gone to the hotel around noon and booked a room for two nights. "He didn't cover his face and was carrying a bag when he checked in", a hotel staffer said. "He went to his room without saying anything".

His management agency SM Entertainment said the star, who was also a successful solo artist, had suffered from severe depression.
