Every year, Kim has donated money to Korean children who live in poverty or suffer from incurable diseases, but this year she said she wanted to help the children of the Philippines.

The money will be used to buy drinking water for children in the affected areas and to improve sanitation and provide education.

In a tweet on Tuesday, the skater urged people to help the typhoon victims.

Kim also donated W100 million (US$1=W1,068) to UNICEF in early 2010 to help earthquake victims in Haiti and was appointed goodwill ambassador later that year.

In May 2011, Kim donated her $27,000 prize money from the World Figure Skating Championship to help Japanese children in areas devastated by the earthquake and tsunami. She gave the $45,000 prize money from this year's championship to help disabled children around the world.
