KOFA releases Shin Sang-ok DVD box set

Five feature films by Korean master director Shin Sang-ok have been released in a special DVD box set by the Korean Film Archive(KOFA).

Shin, who passed away in April of last year, is only the second veteran Korean director to be highlighted in a box set DVD. Previously, Taewon Entertainment released a box set DVD of films by director Im Kwon-taek.

The films include some of the director's most famous work, including the classic drama "Mother and a Guest" (1961), family comedy Romance Papa (1960), box office hit "Seong Chun-hyang" (1961), literary adaptation Samryong the Mute (1964), and fantasy/horror "Thousand Years Old Fox" (1969).

The set also contains a 50-minute documentary on the director, essays by film scholar An Jin-soo, an interview with producer Hwang Nam, and audio commentary's by Shin's wife Choi Eun-hee, who starred in many of his films.

This marks the first DVD collection in what is to be a series of releases by the Korean Film Archive. KOFA has also issued numerous single releases of films from the 1940s and 1950s, and is currently planning a box set release of recently discovered films from the 1930s and 40s.

To coincide with the DVD release, the Korean Film Archive will hold a series of screenings of Shin's films at their former location in the Seoul Arts Center, including works that Shin directed during the time he lived in North Korea, and his final film Winter Story. The box set will also be made available to moviegoers at this time at a discount.

The box set is being distributed by Taewon Entertainment and retails for 49,500 won in Korea.
