KOFIC awards marketing support for arthouse/digital films

The Korean Film Council has announced the recipients of the second phase of its 2005 Marketing Support for Arthouse and Digital Films fund. The fund provides financial support to arthouse works or digital features to promote diversity on the nation's screens and to help such films overcome the particular commercial challenges that face them.

In the case of arthouse films, 90 million won (~$90,000) is provided to pay for advertising and other kinds of marketing costs, including the cost of striking prints for release. In Korea's competitive distribution environment, low-budget works face a particularly difficult struggle in getting noticed by viewers, and so this fund is intended to provide assistance in this area.

In the case of feature-length digital films, 35 million won (~$35,000) is provided towards the rental of a DLP digital projector, so that such works can be screened in their original format. This will also mean that the distributor of the film can avoid the significant cost of transferring a film from digital to a 35mm print.

The following films were chosen on the basis of their overall quality and their chance of securing a theatrical release.

Arthouse films:
"Grain in Ear", dir. Zhang Lu (New Currents Award, 2005 Pusan Int'l Film Festival)
"The Magicians", dir. Song Il-gon

Feature-length digital films:
"Brainwave", dir. Shin Terra
"Shin Sung-il is Lost", dir. Sin Jae-in

"Grain in Ear" is a Chinese-Korean co-production that won the New Currents award at the 2005 Pusan International Film Festival, as well as the top prize from the 2005 Pesaro Film Festival. Magician(s) ("The Magicians") is a digital work shot in a single take, that was originally commissioned by the Jeonju International Film Festival.

The films were chosen by a five-member jury presided over by film director HWANG Qu-dok. A previous round of marketing support was awarded in June 2005.
