KOFIC to promote Korean films at Cannes

The Korean Film Council (KOFIC) will be engaged in diverse efforts to promote Korean cinema at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival.

With five titles screening in various sections of the festival including Kim Jee-woon's "The Good, the Bad, the Weird" (Official Selection, Out of Competition), Na Hong-jin's "The Chaser" (Midnight Screenings), omnibus film "TOKYO!" (Un Certain Regard) which contains a contribution by Bong Joon-ho, Park Jae-ok's animated short "STOP - 2008" (Cinefondation), and Kim Ki-young's 1960 masterpiece "The Housemaid - 1960" (Cannes Classics), KOFIC will be doing its best to provide advance publicity for the screenings. At the same time, it will exert efforts to support sales companies in the Cannes Market who are selling Korean films.

As usual, representatives will also operate the KOFIC Pavilion (Booth #122) in the International Village. The large booth next to the beach will provide a space where festival visitors can collect promotional materials and learn more about Korean cinema. It also provides a convenient meeting place for industry figures. Sales companies Prime Entertainment and Sponge will base their operations within the KOFIC Pavilion.

Other Korean sales companies attending Cannes who will have their own booths in the Cannes Market include Activers Entertainment, CJ Entertainment, Finecut, Mirovision, Showbox, Show East, Sidus FNH and Studio 2.0.

One way in which KOFIC will be stepping up its promotional efforts is by boosting the number of advertisements it places in the three festival dailies run by Variety, Screen International and Hollywood Reporter. Not only officially selected films but also Korean films in the market will be highlighted in an effort to encourage more sales of Korean films.

KOFIC will also bring various new publications to Cannes, including the latest issue of the Korean Film Observatory, the first edition of the Korean Film Guide 2008, and new additions to the Korean Film Directors series including books on Im Sang-soo, Yu Hyun-mok, Yim Soon-rye, and Four Rookie Directors (Jang Joon-hwan, Kim Tae-yong, Jeong Ji-woo and Zhang Lu).

Finally, KOFIC will host a reception in partnership with the Pusan International Film Festival to further boost the prominence of Korean filmmakers in Cannes and provide an opportunity for networking. "KOFIC & PIFF Night" will be held from 22:00 - 24:30 on Monday, May 19 at the Atrium Beach (C-Beach). More information can be obtained at the KOFIC Pavilion, telephone +33 (0)4 9399 8648.

PARK (May 17-20), Manager/Europe Mr. KIM Hyoun-soo (May 13-20), Manager/Asia Ms. Jiyin PARK (May 13-20), Manager/Japan Mr. PARK Jong-won (May 13-20), and Manager/PR&Website Ms. JEON Yoon-hyung (May 17-20).
