Korea to Get More TV Channels Next Year

Korea will get some dozen new TV channels next year. Korea Communications Commission data acquired by the Chosun Ilbo on Wednesday show the government is reviewing the introduction of multi-mode service in 2010.

MMS is a service whereby terrestrial networks simultaneously send broadcasting signals for two or three channels by separating frequencies allocated for high definition broadcasts. Currently, KBS, MBC and SBS, and EBS are sending HD broadcasting signals, but MMS will allow the number to increase to around 10 at a time.

In the media industry, there is a dispute over who would operate the new channels. The KCC has not decided on channel operation policy.
