2006/08/02 Source

The Korean blockbuster The Host, which has been gaining popularity in Korea since it was released on July 26 in Korean theaters nationwide, eye the world film market.

The Korean movie The Host is scheduled to be released in Hong Kong on August 24, and will be screened in Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, and Singapore in the upcoming September.

The Host also looks to European and North American film market. It will be run in France in November and in the United States around the end of this year.

The Korean movie will be invited to some internationally renowned movie festivals, including the Toronto International film Festival in Canada and the Edinburgh International Film Festival in the UK. It will make its debut to the 31st Toronto International Film Festival, which will take place from September 7 to 16, 2006.

The total number of moviegoers who have seen The Host has surpassed the 3-million mark in the first five days of its release in Korean movie theaters, according to the film's distributor said.

The figure indicated that the film reached the 3-million mark within the shortest period of time for a Korean movie ever, breaking the previous record set by the Korean blockbuster "Taegukgi", which drew 3 million in eight days of its release.

The story of The Host, produced by Korean director Bong Joon-ho, is about a five-member family that runs a kiosk alongside Seoul's Han River and loses its only daughter to a monster, which suddenly appears and destroys the tranquility of the riverside.

The Host was highly praised by movie critics when it was introduced at the 59th Cannes International Film Festival in France last May.
