This year marks the 44th anniversary of the festival. The last time a Korean animated feature won an award at Annecy was in 2004, when "Oseam" by Seong Baek-yeob captured the grand prize.

Ahn said, "I realize that culture is something that we all share. Another positive factor was the increased receptiveness for Korean culture and the Korean language by foreigners due to the popularity of BTS and K-pop".

"I've gained confidence that it's possible to overcome language barriers", he added.

This is Ahn's fourth animated film and is based on a 1936 short novel by Kim Dong-ni portraying a tragedy in a family in an island village consisting of a shaman mother and her husband, a mute daughter and a Christian son.
