Korean Dramas Make Inroads into U.S. Market

Korean drama has landed on the American shores and it rapidly coalescing into another Korean wave that may sweep the United States as it has swept much of the world. Along with other signs of Korean culture, whether cellular phones, female professional golfers or Kimchi, Korean dramas are coming of age.

The Associated Press (AP) and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer note that the Korean wave, which has flooded Japan, China, the Philippines, Singapore and Southeast Asian nations like Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia, is finally poised to score another success in the U.S market.

"That small country between Japan and China has produced a timely hit", the head of sales for Korean drama in North America at YA Entertainment, LLC remarked, "Koreans exactly know how to make drama which can rouse Asian fans to enthusiasm".

Since its founding in 2003, YA Entertainment LLC has had great success with Korean dramas such as 'Dae Jang Geom' or 'Stairway of heaven", which resulted in the fantastic growth of the company by tripling its profits at a rate of three times every year.

Even couple years ago, it was not easy to find Korean dramas in the U.S; fans could only get Korean drama from some limited Asian video shops. However, the situation is totally different today as Korean dramas make deep inroads in the U.S market. This phenomenon has enabled large markets, such as Wal-Mart, Costco, Blockbuster, and Tower Records to find a ready market for the DVD series of Korean dramas.

Furthermore, these series of dramas are distributed through online markets by Amazon.com. In addition, many other bookstores and record shops are selling them in L.A, San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago and New York.

American audiences have been pleased that Korean Drama is neither too violent nor too obscene. Also, although Korean drama also covers subjects such as Forbidden Love, love triangles, corrupt business partners and vicious staff mothers familiar to fans of American soap operas, it differs from American dramas in that each drama comes to a complete conclusion 16 to 20 hours of episodes.
