Netflix has unveiled its 'TOP 10 of the Day' ranking, becoming an indicator of the popularity of Korean drama content in Asia.
In principle, Global OTT Netflix, which did not disclose its cumulative ratings or popularity ranking for service content, began releasing 'TOP 10 of the Day' on March 25th. The list was updated once a day by major countries, allowing Netflix users to gauge the latest trends in what content they enjoy watching.
With the release of popular content rankings in major Asian countries, including Korea, it is once again confirming the status of 'K-drama'.
For example, "Kingdom - Season 2", starring Ju Ji-hoon, first released on March 13th, topped the 'Top 10 of the Day' list in major Asian countries such as Thailand, the Philippines, Singapore and Hong Kong as of March 17th.
Latest Korean dramas and dramas in real-time broadcasting have also been popular. Starring Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin, "Crash Landing on You", "Itaewon Class" starring Park Seo-joon and Kim Da-mi and "Hi Bye, Mama!" starring Kim Tae-hee, were also at the top of the list in major Asian countries.
With a new platform called Global OTT, the time difference between content consumption between countries is decreasing. In addition, a separate 'TOP 10' popular content badge has been added to 'TOP 10 of the Day' to allow more viewers to come in.
In addition, there is a big boom waiting. Starring Lee Min-ho and Kim Go-eun, and to be simultaneously released by SBS and Netflix in April, "The King: Eternal Monarch" is also attracting Asian fans' expectations. Lee Min-ho, a popular Asian actor, and Kim Eun-sook's synergy, which is well-known even to overseas fans, guarantees a spot in the Box Office.
Regarding this phenomenon, Eun Goo-seul, a pop culture critic, said, "K-drama has been consumed mostly as romantic comedies based on interest in fashion and cosmetics, centered around the 20s and 30s in Asia. But ever since the four-time U.S. Oscar winner "Parasite", interest in famous Korean writers and actors has spread throughout the entire generation", she said. "It is also noteworthy that the use of the OTT platform has exploded amidst COVID-19, which has encroached on the entire world, with other viewers other than fanatics entering the 'K-drama' fan base".
