Korean Film Council Protests Screen Quota Cuts

At a conference held Dec. 28 in the Preview Room of the Korean Film Council building in Cheongnyangni-dong, Seoul, and attended by movie industry leaders and actors, eight members of the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), including vice chairman Chang Mi-hee, announced their statement reiterating their support for the screen quota system.

"Screen quota has served as a springboard for promoting Korean movies, and contributed greatly to the worldwide efforts to protect cultural diversity. Eliminating (the screen quota) will allow Hollywood movies - not art cinema or independent films - to fill the void", said council members in their statement.

They clarified their stance that screen quota should remain to ensure the development of Korean movies, and said they will protest the abolishment of screen quota with all available means, including KOFIC's members' resignation.

This conference was organized to dismiss rumors that the movie industry is deeply split on the screen quota issue and show that all movie industry representatives and actors are unanimous in their opinion.
