Korean film industry at the 8th TIFFCOM

The Korean film industry is strongly represented at the Tokyo International Film Festival's content market TIFFCOM, which opened yesterday to run until Oct 26 in the Roppongi Hills complex. The Korean Film Council (KOFIC) has opened an umbrella stand with seven sales companies - CJ Entertainment, Showbox / Mediaplex, Finecut,M-Line Distribution, 9ers Entertainment, Lotte Entertainment, and Mirovision.

"Last year, the KOFIC umbrella stand only had four companies, but this year we have a large-scale stand with seven companies. They are doing well with meetings results already on the first day. The companies were able to schedule ahead from Busan's Asian Film Market", said Jiwon CHOI, Japan & Europe Regional Manager on KOFIC's International Co-production Team.

The companies are selling hot films such as "Punch", "Blind", "Arrow, The Ultimate Weapon", "A Fish" and "Never Ending Story".

KOFIC is also holding the "Ko-Production in Tokyo" event in conjunction with the TIFFCOM 2011 Project Market.Five Korea-Japan co-production projects are participating in Ko-Pro Tokyo which will run Oct. 25 – 27 with mentoring and one-on-one business meetings. (See below for projects line-up.)

As part of TIFFCOM's seminar on East Asian Content 2011 yesterday, KOFIC Commissioner and Konkuk University Professor Nick SONG made a presentation on the Republic of Korea's efforts to encourage international co-productions.

Also during TIFFCOM, KOFIC will hold a presentation on the Global Contents Fund and Location Incentive Systems in Korea. It will detail the Korean government's KW100 billion (US$90 million) Global Fund to finance film, TV and animation projects involving Korean companies, as well as present KOFIC's locations incentive program.

Ko-Production in Tokyo line-up

(alphabetical order)

- "Minds on Tide" a road movie about love and memories, directed by award-winning filmmaker Kim Young-nam, who previously directed "Boat" and"Don't Look Back".

- "Miracle - Movie", directed by Kim Sang-man, whose credits include "Midnight FM" and"Girl Scout". The film is based on the true story of a classical tenor who loses his voice to cancer but battles to get it back.

- "Most Romantic Sea", althougha director has yet to be attached, the project is based on Japanese writer KAMATA Toshio's bestselling novel "The World's Most Romantic Sea". Kamata also wrote the original novel that the hit Korean film "Singles" was based upon.

- "My Name Is Nobody", a mystery thriller directed by KIM Sung-su, with well-known international producer Iseki SATORU attached on the Japan side.

- "My Two Mommies", a documentary by Park Jeongsuk. The story is about her biological Korean mother and her adopted Japanese mother. Park's previously directed the documentary "Camellia Lady" which was in the Busan International Film Festival in 2006.
