Korean films take 60% share

Korean movie's domestic market share surpassed 60 percent in 2006 despite the reduced screen quota system which went into effect last June, the Korean Film Council said yesterday.

The state-funded film agency said the total number of moviegoers in Korea reached 138.5 million last year, and Korean films accounted for 63.8 percent, up 6 percent from 57.8 percent a year earlier.

Last year, a record 118 Korean films were released, attracting about 88.4 million moviegoers nationwide and posting about 535.8 billion won ($579 million) in box-office sales.

Meanwhile, 132 Hollywood movies were released last year, drawing 42 million Korean moviegoers and carving out a 30.8 percent market share, down 4.8 percentage points from 2005. Foreign films generated about 259.4 billion won in sales.

The share of American movies declined from 35.6 percent in 2005 to 38.6 percent last year.

Japanese movies held a 2.41 percent share here, while other foreign films did not see a big jump in ticket sales with Chinese movies holding just 0.98 percent and French flicks 0.51 percent.

The Korean blockbuster "The Host" topped the box office ranking last year, with other local flicks including "Tazza: The High Rollers" ("Tazza: The High Rollers") and "My Boss, My Teacher" drawing good crowds. Among foreign movies, "Mission Impossible 3" and "Pirates of the Caribbean 3" posted strong ticket sales last year.
