New actors come and go, especially in the wave that is Hallyu. Talents and beauties cross art genres all the time, whether at the behest of their companies, or because they feel compelled by the desire to succeed in a new challenge. Many new idol actors dabble in acting to get their name out onto the market, which is most certainly true of the two young men to be featured. Most of these idols do well. Some find they have an affinity for it; others find that they should remain idols. A few show a natural charisma that makes them the diamonds in the rough. Two of those who show that charisma are Yong Jun-hyung
from Cube Entertainment's highly successful Beast; and Do Kyung-soo
, better know as D.O. from the incredibly famous SM group, EXO.
Both of these young men had ample stage and television experience before they dove into acting. Their idol groups performed, toured, appeared on music shows, talk shows and much more. This experience prepared them some for speaking in front of the camera. What makes these acting rookies special is how comfortable they appear on scr...More

The direction in "Sing Again, Hera Gu" makes the drama look like a music video. That's not necessarily an insult, it's just that realizing this helps me to understand somewhat why the plot frequently takes such radical terms. In music videos, no one really cares about situations being overly melodramatic because they're so short. Car crashes, lovelorn crooning, secret conspiracies- heck, most music videos only even have vague verbal references to their "story" at all, relying mostly on visuals. So why should an Mnet drama be any different?...More
The viewers have spoken, so "Sing Again, Hera Gu" gives them what they really want- more fabulous shots featuring the manly chest of Shim Hyung-tak. I find it kind of hard to believe that the two directors are male. But maybe that was just the main point of discussion at the last meeting. Jeong Soo-hyeon and Sin Myeong-jin going no, no, no. The whole reason we wrote the shirtless scene was so that everyone could get a good long look at his chest and you did it wrong. If Shim Hyung-tak himself had any objection to this it was well-hidden. The man's performance is as jovially seriously ridiculous as ever...More

When 2NE1 debuted in September 2009, they quickly rose to stardom, breaking new ground for girl group singers in the Kpop industry by shattering the stereotypes previously set for a "Korean girl group" – pretty, but rather bland, lacking in personality.
2NE1 first became known to the public through the song, "Lollipop", digitally released in early 2009, as a promotion song for an LG Cyon mobile phone commercial. It was a joint release with Big Bang, the hottest all-boy "Idol" group in Korea, as well as sharing the same label, YG Entertainment. "Lollipop" immediately hit No. 1 on various online charts as well as on several music television shows for over three consecutive weeks...More

Idol groups are fighting fierce battles from the start of the new year by releasing new albums. Many idol groups including star idol groups such as TVXQ, Seungri from Big Bang, and JYJ, and newcomer groups such as MBLAQ, Secret, Dalmatian, Infinite, and Dalshabet will release new albums. Usually, singers do not release new albums in January and February after finishing their activities at the end of the last year, but this year will be different because star singers and new singers are all beginning to have showdowns from the beginning of the year. The team leader of the Music Business Department at Mnet Media said on January 2, "Singers tended to release new albums in September or October in the past, but recently they are actively performing all year round by releasing single albums and mini albums. Idol groups regardless of their popularity all think that they will be forgotten if they do not have activities, so they release new songs one after another without taking a long break"...More
KBS series "Dream High" [KBS]
KBS2 Monday & Tuesday 9:55 p.m.
KBS drama "Dream High" takes off at seven years from now, with singer "K", a graduate of Kirin Art School, appearing at the Grammy Awards ceremony. Chung Ha-myung (Bae Yong-joon), the director of Kirin High, reminisces on how all he did was strike a "break shot" (the first shot in billiards that scatters the balls). The problem with the first episode of "Dream High" was in those balls. The way Ko Hye-mi (played by Suzy), the so-called genius in vocal music, jeers at popular culture went beyond arrogance to make it seem forced and the scene where Jin-guk (Ok Taecyeon) easily fights off the men who are after Hye-mi, several loan sharks including their boss (Ahn Kil-gang) who are after her father, or the overuse of slow motion was cliche enough to be seen in a scene of an online comic book...More
G-Dragon and T.O.P (Choi Seung-hyun) [Lee Jin-hyuk, Chae Ki-won/10Asia]
Not everybody can express their thoughts through music. And not everybody can organize and speak of the result of the thoughts they have gained from making music. But G-Dragon and T.O.P (Choi Seung-hyun) are musicians who can do both. They spoke only of their music throughout our interview with them and talked about the thoughts they injected into their music. Whether you agree with their music or not, we recommend you read this interview to hear what the two have to say about their music. This is what it means for these two young men in their early 20s, regarded as idols stars, to make their own music and present it to people.

1 Gwanghwamun restored
Gwanghwamun, the main entrance to Gyeongbok Palace and one of Korea's representative symbols, was unveiled on Aug. 15 after more than three years of renovations.
The unveiling came in time for the G20 Seoul Summit inNovember, as well as the 65th anniversary of the country's liberation from colonial Japan in 1945; it thus holds great symbolic importance: built in 1395, the gate was destroyed during a 16th-century Japanese invasion.
Though later reconstructed, its location was shifted during Japanese colonial rule.
Criticism arose over the craftsmanship of the iconic edifice's nameplate as cracks began to form on the surface, and the national heritage administration decided Tuesday to replace it.
2 Cultural relics reclaimed
French President Nicolas Sarkozy agreed in November to return ancient royal Korean documents that French troops looted during a 19th-century attack, though on a permanent lease contract that is to be renewed every five years.
The agreement settles an issue that had been pending for 19 years. The books are currently stored at the National Library of France in Paris.
Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan also agreed to return a collection of 1,205 royal books known as "Uigwe" that were stolen during Japan's 1910-45 colonial rule.
Meanwhile, UNESCO recognized three Korean cultural traditions - "gagok" (lyrical songs), "maesanyang" (falcon hunting), and "daemokjang" (artistry of wooden architecture) - as intangible world treasures in November.
3 Celebrities pass
In 2010, Korea lost spiritual props in Buddhism, fashion and entertainment.
Ven. Beop Jeong, one of the most highly revered Buddhist monks in the country, passed away in March. He is noted for his books and essays, sharing lessons he learned from Buddhism.
"Poverty that is made by choice is not poverty at all", he wrote in "Musoyu", one of his most popular books. After his death, his books all sold out at local bookstores.
In August, Korea's top fashion designer Andre Kim departed this life.
The pioneer designer was considered an ambassador of Korean fashion to the world. He held numerous fashion shows known for their distinct venues, such as amid the Egyptian Pyramids, and for featuring top actors and actresses such as Kim Hee-sun
Hallyu, or Korean wave, star Park Yong-ha
took his own life in June, with fans in Korean and Japan grieving the loss.

Girls' Generation at the 2010 MelOn Music Awards Ceremony on December 15, 2010. [Lee Jin-hyuk/10Asia]
Artists from SM Entertainment were nowhere to be seen at the 2010 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA). The same thing could be said of YG Entertainment at this year's Golden Disc Awards Ceremony that came after. But at the MelOn Music Awards held at the Peace Hall of Kyung Hee University on December 15, all three major agencies -- SM, YG and JYP Entertainment (JYPE) -- gathered together, proving the influence the nation's largest online music contents site has over even the 3 largest houses in the music industry.
Unfortunately, the quality of the actual ceremony which went on for three hours and was hosted by actor Song Joong-ki, hardly matched up to the fame of guests who gathered that day...More
"My score is..". and "Cha Do Nam" (meaning a cold-hearted chic man of the city)
Many gloomy accidents and incidents including the sinking of corvette Cheonan and the shelling of Yeonpyeong Island had occurred throughout this year in society, but many buzzwords had also been created and greatly loved by people in the popular culture. Popular programs such as "Superstar K - Season 2","High Kick Through The Roof", and "Bread, Love and Dreams" had entered the cradle of buzzwords, and those buzzwords had been talked about for a year by people, in pleasant times as well as times of suffering. But some buzzwords had aroused criticism and could not be kept as buzzwords. For example, the buzzwords created from the KBS comedy program "Gag Concert", saying "I am Dong Hyuk's old brother", which had made viewers feel refreshed, had been criticized by a civic group, who insisted, "the phrase is an inflammatory phrase base on populism"...More

Sensation over six of singer Lee Hyori
's songs, apparently plagiarized by Bahnus, is about to snowball as more singers and industry insiders claim to have been duped by the composer.
Bahnus, the leader of the seven-member composers' group Bahnus Vacuum, faces a string of lawsuits that extend to his management and team members. The looming legal battles are expected to be the largest in K-pop history.
On Wednesday, Chang, the management director of Bahnus Vacuum, said he had found a "statement of regret" written by Bahnus, whose real name is Lee Jae-young, on Lee's computer hard disc. The letter was, surprisingly, not for Lee Hyori
but for a relatively unknown singer Lee Hyun, written two years ago.
Lee Hyun, who sang "Jajonshim" (pride) written by Bahnus in 2008, received complaints from another composer Kim just a few days after the song was released. Kim claimed the rhythm, melody and lyrics were identical to his creation.
When Lee Hyun asked Bahnus for an explanation, he promised to drop his name from the credits and pay a refund for the song.
Chang said Bahnus, who introduced himself as "a Yonsei University graduate who had sold numerous songs to foreign artists during his stay in the U.K", lied about other things too.
"He was not a Yonsei University graduate and the contracts he had suggested for potential song sales were also fabricated", he told a local daily.
"Had I seen the letter before, if I had known that Bahnus was a conman, I would never have started the company to support young talented composers", Chang...More
Can pop stars be forgiven practically any offense? That is a question on many lips after the revelation that singer Lee Hyori
's latest album "h.logic" contains no fewer than six plagiarized songs. Lee admitted to the wrongdoing and vowed to refrain from promoting the album. Yet she appeared on a recent SBS program.
The producers say Lee was not directly responsible for the plagiarism, but the public sees things differently. They feel it is unseemly for Lee to make out that she is a victim herself, and that the producers of TV shows should not sweep the problem under the carpet.
Unlike other artists accused of plagiarism, who deny their wrongdoings to the end, Lee owned up. But the fact that half of an artist's album consisted of songs that had been stolen from foreign artists le...More
Singer Lee Hyori

At first, I trusted their saying that the demo songs had been leaked, and also I did not suspect their opinion at all because I received those songs through my agency. But, after thorough investigation, it was found that the songs had not been composed by them". Seven songs in Lee Hyori
's fourth album have continuously brought controversy about plagiarism on the Internet, but her agency Mnet Media had officially announced that the demo songs were accidentally leaked as Bahnus strongly insisted.

Sometimes nothing will go according to plan, even when you are a big star like Lee Hyori
The singer has had her fair share of fame over the past 12 years, starting as the leader of the now disbanded girl group Fin.K.L, then as a solo singer and until recently the host of the popular television show "The Family is Out!" My name is Kim Dong-wook.
I was born on July 29, 1983.
I like actor Johnny Depp especially in "Donnie Brasco" where he played an FBI agent who goes undercover and joins the mafia. I am greedy in the sense that I want to play masculine roles like that.
There was a period in my life where I felt uneasy if I didn't listen to music even for a minute. Wherever I went, wherever I was and even when I'm sleeping, I had to listen to music to calm myself mentally. I remember breaking my speakers when I connected them to my CD player and tried to play them in the shower. I still love music but not as much as I did back then...More

The Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) came to an end Saturday, but unfortunately, there were some shortcomings despite it being called Asia's best music award event.
The much-anticipated event was held at Jamsil Indoor Stadium, with young fans lined up near the entrances in hopes of catching a glimpse of some of their favorite K-pop singers.
Mnet Media scrapped its 10-year Mnet KM Music Festival (MKMF) in October, announcing that it was bringing an upgraded music event for not only fans in Korea, but throughout Asia as well. While the overall show was entertaining, it failed to truly captivate fans with its results and concept.
The red carpet entrance was a good way to kick off the six-hour event, with female singers donning stylish outfits, mostly in black, some in fur and others in leather.
MAMA offered eight main stages, or "waves", each with special concepts and performances.
The first wave, "Asian Fever", featured Drunken Tiger, who later won the Best Male Solo Artist. The award for the Best Female Solo Artist went to Baek Ji-young
. The Best New Male Artist went to the Supreme Team, while 2NE1
won the Best New Female Artist, and two other awards eventually, including the Best Music Video and, one of the grand prizes, the Best Song of the Year for "I Don't Care".
The second wave, "Girls x Girls", featured top girl groups the Brown Eyed Girls, which won the Best Female Group and Best House & Electronic awards, and Kara
, which won Best Dance.

Mnet Media, one of Korea's most popular music networks, will scrap its 10-year-old music festival for a new one titled "2009 Mnet Asian Music Awards" (MAMA).
The former event "Mnet KM Music Festival" (MKMF) was organized by two music cable channels, Mnet and KM. It was considered one of the biggest music award events in Korea. However, Mnet surprised fans when they posted a large sign on its Web site early this month saying that they were not holding the MKMF this year.
Curiosity emerged, and the network finally announced that they were creating a new event that would attract not only Korea's most popular singers, but also those from around the world.
"Our final goal is to not only show the best of Korean music to the world, but also become Asia's representative award event and attract other famous artists to come as well", Mnet Media said.
The network is preparing subtle yet unique changes, from the style of the event to the judging system.
The biggest change will be the overall concept.

Reigning girl group Girls' Generation
is ahead of the game, for now.
By Han Sang-hee
The local pop scene is sizzling with an array of girl groups, both old and new, and the competition is expected to heat up with each band presenting distinctive sounds, fashion and personalities.
Girls' Generation and the Wonder Girls have been the top girl groups for the past two years, but now their thrones are starting to look a bit shaky as new groups loaded with new tricks have appeared.
The nine-member Girls' Generation, of SM Entertainment, released their new album "Genie" in June, donning a marine and military style for their new look. They have been topping charts on Internet music Web sites and music programs aired on television.
Despite the success, the group's image has been smeared by several incidents: First there was the rumor regarding an album cover that depicted a Japanese fighter jet; then the discord between band members; seen from clips taken by fans during rehearsals; and finally a plagiarism dispute, an allegation which later turned out to be false.
The Wonder Girls, of JYP Entertainment, on the other hand, are busy in the United States as the opening act of the Jonas Brothers' U.S. tour. The group was originally scheduled for 13 concerts, but after the girls surprised both fans and organizers with their witty handling of a technical delay, they were offered to open the entire 45 concerts.

An array of programs by cable channels are presenting programs that beckon viewers to stand in front of the camera themselves.
Cable music channel Mnet leads these programs, with a total of three programs open for viewers to join in and become a part of them. One of the most anticipated is "Superstar K", which is the Korean version of the United States' hit program "American Idol". With a winning prize of more than 100 million won and the chance to make a debut this coming fall backed by music mogul Mnet, more than 5,000 viewers applied on the first day of admissions.
"There were plenty of similar music programs that held auditions for aspiring singers but the problem with most of them was the lack of support and interest given to the winners after the program. Another important feature we focused on is that literally anyone can participate and try out to become the next top singer of Korea", the makers of "Superstar K" said through a statement.

Well-made existing programs are refined through formatting, aiming at foreign market

Younghoon David Kim, chairman of energy, environment and culture-based business Dae-sung Group, had a nice surprise in China two years ago when he was on a business trip.

Due to the guidelines set by the government, Chinese people were allowed to watch made-in-Korea dramas only after 10 p.m. Despite the inconvenience, families gathered together in front of television late at night to watch Korean dramas", said the businessman.

Trying to stop illegal music downloading on the Internet may seem like an impossible task, as young and old Internet users alike freely download copyrighted songs without awareness of the criminal implications.

Now, the music industry has changed tactics. According to Lee Deok-yo, the CEO of the Korean Association of Phonogram Producers (KAPP), the industry is fighting against rampant music piracy through an information campaign featuring pop stars like Wonder Girls and FT Island

The global economic crisis and corresponding local business sentiments are spreading over to the entertainment sector. Planned dramas are being dropped from production while top celebrities are willingly reducing their paychecks.
Main broadcasters MBC, KBS and SBS have each cut one drama from their programming budgets this fall, as production costs, along with actors' paychecks, are still soaring higher than ever.
At a seminar dubbed "The Crisis of TV dramas and Normalization of Performance Fees", drama directors from television networks, producers from outsource production companies, actors, scholars and civil group members got together to further discuss the reality and come up with constructive solutions.
"Production costs have jumped 25 percent to even 120 percent since 2004. The surprising part of the jump is that almost 60 percent of it is due to the paychecks (of the actors)", said Ha Yun-geum from the Korean Broadcasting Institute.
The paychecks given to top actors ranged from one million won to nine million won in 2002, but the number has jumped to 10 million and higher. Now it takes about 25 million won per episode to bring a top celebrity to star in a...More

Not only stars become best friends to each other. A stylist maintains much closer relationship to a star than their manager and is solely responsible for their management. Therefore they are an inseparable assistance and a strong supporter and a best friend.
If a certain star made a sudden escape from disgraceful "worst dress" to honourable "Best dresser" category, there must be a well-matched stylist behind them.
Actor Lee Young-ae

Singer "Ivy" is going through a rough patch after the arrest of a man named Yu (31) last week who had attempted to blackmail her with a revealing video clip showing him with the K-pop star. Yu and "Ivy" had been in a romantic relationship for the past two years.
"Ivy" is this year's undisputed no.1, rising to the top with her second album "Sonata of Temptation" released early this year and is also busy shooting commercials for everything from cosmetics to drinks. "The incident has made it impossible for "Ivy" to go on with her public appearances or even go for a simple walk outside", says her agency. That requires a rethink of her scheduled appearance at various end-of-the-year events and commercial shoots. They could include the 2007 Mnet KM Music Festival...More
