This year marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of one of the greatest thinkers of the later Joseon period ― Dasan Jeong Yak-yong (1762-1836). Last Saturday, more than 500 worshippers visited his tomb in Namyangju, northeast of Seoul, to commemorate his death. • On Confucian values

    2012/01/21, Source
The main purpose of this short sketch is to raise the awareness of the background of certain actions. I will present 3 Rules and 5 Bonds (Relations) that are fundamental in Confucian philosophy and their reverberations in the modern society. Confucian values. Realization of those values in life. Contemporary society. Actually, the philosophy I am referring to is not Confucianism per se but Neo-Confucianism (seongnihak) that was widely spread during Joseon period (1392 – 1910) and its features are etched subconsciously in every Korean psyche. • [INTERVIEW] KBS drama "SungKyunKwan Scandal" writer Kim Tae-heui - Part 1

    2010/11/05, Source
Writer Kim Tae-heui [Lee Jin-hyuk/10Asia] KBS TV series "Sungkyunkwan Scandal" finished its run on November 2. In the story set in late 18th century Joseon, a girl named Kim Yoon-hee (Park Min-young) entered the royal academy of SungKyunKwan disguised as a boy where she learned that true learning heads toward people and that they are the very foundation of the country. King Jeongjo (Jo Sung-ha) too tells her, "Now it's your turn to dream of a new future for Joseon". Trying to describe the ideals young people have is not easy. One wrong step and it can sound like an empty slogan or childish passion. That was not the case for Kim Tae-heui though, the script writer of drama "Sungkyunkwan Scandal" who pulled it off by adding modernity and refreshing new scenes to the already charming SungKyungKwan story based on the book "The Days of SungKyunKwan Students". 10 Asia interviewed Kim just few hours before the drama wrapped up. 10: "Sungkyunkwan Scandal" was seen in various lights. Some saw it as an up-and-coming story, some as a historical political drama and others simply as melodrama. How did you decide on the direction of the story? Kim Tae-heui: Before getting into the synopsis I had a lot of fun watching the SBS drama "Shining Inheritance",...More
