  • [HanCinema's Drama Review] "Circle"

The painfully small selection of science fiction works in Korean drama and the often unsuccessful and dull efforts of the industry when tackling new things made the anticipation for "Circle" quite nerve-wracking. While "Joseon X-Files - Secret Book" is a bit of a cult classic among fans, it left a lot to be desired. "Circle" chooses a different approach and it surprises in the most pleasant, satisfying of ways,...More
  • [HanCinema's Drama Preview] "Circle"

Aliens that do not come to Earth ready for romance with their reincarnated love from the Joseon dynasty have just not been a thing in Korean drama. Science fiction as a genre is a very rare one even in Korean cinema. Yet perhaps Dramaland is ready to tackle it as more than romance garnish for a change. Enter "Circle". Premise A mysterious disappearance and the arrival of extraterrestrial life in 2017, a mysterious murder in 2037. The story of "Circle" takes place in two timelines and it deals with a world experiencing its first alien contact and evolving through it. The citizens of the future attempt to end violence by controlling human emotion with its technology,...More
  • [Orion's Drama News] The Dying and the Undead

Hello once again, folks. I am back with more drama news gathered over the past two weeks. Today I take a look at fresh material from "Radiant Office", I figuratively salivate over an upcoming drama by writer Kim Eun-hee-I of "Signal" fame and I also take a look at "Queen of Mystery" and her ajumma detective adventures,...More
  • [Orion's Drama News] Science Fiction Hype

I hope you are feeling jolly today and that you have ridiculous amounts of holiday food. Ori-santa may not have Christmas-related content, but I ho-ho-hope my drama news will do. Today I talk science fiction in Dramaland that is not gimmicky aliens in love with actresses. I also take a look at exciting drama news from tvN and share more despair from "Missing 9",...More
  • [HanCinema's Actor Spotlight] Jo Hee-bong

Stardom is a tricky thing in any big industry. Depending on where it places its importance, there are different requirements for creating a star. Some actors work hard to get there, some go by popularity alone and without their skills necessarily being worth their success. But as important as all types of stars are, they would not matter without all of the supporting actors that enrich the world of each work. Jo Hee-bong is one of those actors,...More
  • [HanCinema's Column] Unconventional Korean Dramas - The Reviews

In the '[HanCinema's Column] Unconventional Korean Dramas' piece, I presented some examples/suggestions of dramas which are different to the usual works found in the industry. Due to premise, genre, characterization or other elements, they are series the likes of which we do not see in Korean drama often,...More
  • [HanCinema's Column] Unconventional Korean Dramas

Being a movie fan making a jump to dramas can be a daunting experience. The two are very different in many ways. From budget to tropes, from acting to directing, they are worlds apart. While there are genres even Korean films do not often touch, Korean drama is much more limited in its diversity. Sageuk, melodrama, dailies, romantic comedies, the types and formats of series are limited,...More
  • [HanCinema's Drama Review] "Joseon X-Files - Secret Book"

Korean science fiction drama. Well there is something you do not see a lot of right there. Science fiction as a genre has really not been attempted much by Korean cinema either and Korean drama is no different with this particular genre. So the fact that a series like 'Joseon X-Files - Secret Book' even exists is a bit of a Dramaland miracle, but the fact that is a mostly well-made and interesting series is an even bigger surprise. The series aired on tvN in 2010 and has two directors and eight writers,...More

  • Korean Cable Television - A Mirror World

    2011/10/22, Source
OCN's "God's Quiz" Up until a few months ago, when I first caught sight of "God's Quiz", I was not aware of cable channels in South Korea. Not even of their existence, let alone the works they produce. Which meant that the aforementioned series came as quite a shock to me. For one thing, it wasn't a melodrama, a romantic comedy or a sageuk, as it feels that public television does not know any other genres, save for the occasional exceptions. Or at least they don't get promoted as well as the same ol' same ol'. This was a crime/medical series. Not only that, but it didn't feature a cast comprised of hot men and women sporting the most expensive and fancy clothes and being the center of everything simply because of their looks,...More
  • Supernatural in Kdrama

    2011/10/22, Source
What is the first thing on our mind when we hear "supernatural"? Wizards? Magical powers? None of them belong, in fact, to the world of "supernatural" or "overnatural" as I prefer to call it. The difference is huge. "Supernatural" depicts some extra amount added to the existing "natural" base (as in super-computer, it's still computer nonetheless), but "overnatural" is some kind of transgression. It stays with a distance from the natural, and it may or may not have few common places. I don't jump into the groundbreaking conclusion after seeing trailer to one movie. That would be as wise as judge Kdramaland after seeing only one episode of some drama. I read hundreds of sources, to tell the truth. And no, Gandalf doesn't belong to "supernatural". Magic is something different. Magic encompasses supernatural but it doesn't own it,...More
  • 'Soldier' Kim Ji-hoon said, 'Natalie' will be meaningful movie to Korea film industry

    2010/10/04, Source
Kim Ji-hoon, who joined the army on October 4th, showed great confidence in his debut film, ‘Natalie’, which is the first Korean 3D mellow movie. Director Joo Kyeong-joong who directed ‘A Little Monk’ will direct this movie and it is about three people, Jun-hyeok a sculptor who blocked himself out from the world, Min woo, the art critic, and Mi-ran who majors modern dance; there are love and secret among them.,...More
