  • [HanCinema's Hall of Fame Review] "Bad Guy"

    2013/12/07
In the Spotlight this Week: "Bad Guy" by Kim Ki-duk Kim Ki-duk is the South's dark alchemist, an atypical cine-wizard with a sinister searchlight philosophy that burns to the third degree. From his corrupt caldron the world has been exposed and salted with some of the most devastating deliverances of morality found to be flickering at 24fps. His award-winning filminds are shot with sick skill and a demonic sense of knowing that perverts our gaze, harassing our moral codes into disorder and forcing them to reconstitute themselves into God-less variants. And we dare not take them with us out of the Event. His seventh seal "Bad Guy" (2002) is a forced marriage between sex and violence; one that bleeds a coagulated cunning that is both sadistic and stunning-a psychosexual lashing ill-disguised as a requiem for cardinal (dis)pleasure. And till death they depart,...More

  • Kim Jae-wook, Namgoong Min and Jo Hyun-jae, The Faces of Janus

    2019/06/03, Source
Actors who have mostly been playing bad guys or good guys have expanded their spectrum and no longer draw a line between good and evil. Kim Jae-wook is a known actor for his roles as the colder guys. He's mostly been that bad-tempered and chic one in dramas like "Coffee Prince", "Bad Guy", "Marry Me, Mary!" and others. Now he has gone rogue. Kim Jae-wook caused a sensation with the role of psychopath Mo Tae-goo in the OCN drama "Voice" and it was said that he had met his life's character for the first time in 10 years. In addition, the actor starred in the OCN drama "The Guest - Drama" as exorcist Choi Yoon and unleashed his charisma,...More

  • [Guest Film Review] "Declaration of Fools" with Full Movie

    2018/06/16
In an era (the 80's) where Korean national cinema was relegated to rapidly produced films whose sole purpose was to earn the quota in order to screen Hollywood movies, Lee Jang-ho's  effort stands out for its experimental nature and social critique, which eventually netted it the 9th (11th) place in the list with the 100 Best Korean Films of All Time, as comprised by the Korean Film Archive. The film received favorable reviews both domestically and internationally at the time, and was actually a box-office success,...More
  • [Guest Film Review] "Chilsu and Mansu" with Full Movie

    2018/05/12
If one was to look for the direct roots of contemporary Korean, one should not look much further than Park Kwang-soo's debut, a wonderful sociopolitical allegory based on a rather unusual friendship between two men. 1988 was the year of the Seoul Olympics, and a time of great political and social change for South Korea. Massive street protests against the military government and on behalf of workers' rights had recently reached their peak. However, the Korean society portrayed through cinema in those days little resembled the passions on display in the street. Government censors, wielding an iron grip over the film industry, ensured that the slightest hint of social criticism was clipped in the screenplay or in the editing room before reaching audiences,...More

bad guy by melpoupart

S
