Actress Lee Young-ae paid for the entire W400 million cost of a charity concert for noncommissioned officers at Jangchung Gymnasium in Seoul last Friday, the organizers said (US$1=W1,167).

Lee has donated a total of W300 million to the charity over the last five years, including money for the first benefit concert in 2011.

Lee is the daughter of a Korean War veteran and takes a keen interest in disadvantaged military personnel.

She also donated W50 million to two soldiers who were maimed by North Korean box mines in the demilitarized zone in August.

She has told friends that non-commissioned officers still get a raw deal compared to other officers even though they pull at least the same weight in defending the country.

Friday's concert was attended by about 3,500 people, including veterans and their families.
