The actress Lee Young-ae, one of the leading stars of the Korean Wave, has shocked fans with her secret marriage to a Korean-American businessman at the Kahala Hotel and Resort in Hawaii on Monday.
There are rumors that Lee's original plan was to get married somewhere else. According to a source who witnessed the wedding, the couple originally planned to tie the knot in Vancouver, Canada. "But because Lee is so famous, they looked for a place where they could be free from public scrutiny and ultimately decided on Hawaii".
The source said only 16 people attended the wedding, all apparently family members.
Little is known about Lee's husband except his surname, Jeong. "He is said to be in his 50s, but he certainly doesn't look that old", the source said. "He looks mid-40s maximum". The wedding was officiated by a pastor whom Jeong invited from Chicago. The bride and groom were dressed simply and unostentatiously, and the newlyweds reportedly enjoyed a meal on the terrace of the hotel's restaurant.
Lee announced the marriage through law firm Dongin Law Group instead of her agency, warning she will take legal action against any invasion of her privacy and declining to disclose any personal details or photos of the groom. The secrecy has only stoked curiosity among her many fans across Asia.
